I was first introduced to DJing in 1980 when at the tender age of 12, I joined the hospital radio station, hospital radio Hairmyres In East Kilbride, Scotland .
It didn’t take me long to get involved in Mobile Discos at the age of 13! Then getting my first nightclub gig at the age of 14 (they believed I was 18 at the time!!) 😂😂
I remember that feeling at 14 years old, climbing a huge staircase to this disco “paradise” called Zanzi-Bar in Glasgow, a traditional Mecca style club, open genre, a capacity of 3000 and with lots of fake palm trees, and neon lights, fog and lasers…. I was hooked. Within a fortnight I was resident DJ.
That for me was the start of a long career doing something I loved a career that seen my work at the majority of clubs in central Scotland, then move to Spain in 1988, first spending two seasons in Salou, one year in Tenerife, one in Benidorm and one in Magaluf (I was young and needed the money.) 😂😂
I moved to Germany in 1993, and also worked extensively in the clubs of Hamburg, and surrounding areas, most notably I was resident at “Die Insel”, Hamburg for three years. The club where Germany’s rich and famous used to hang out every weekend, and I suppose the German equivalent to Stringfellows in London.
A had a passion for Soul, music and all its sub variants (House, Reggae, Motown etc) and those was reflected each and every weekend.
In the year 2000, at the ripe old age of 32, I took up a full time career in IT, and my DJing became more of a part time number. I left Germany in 2005 to move back to the UK and again played the circuit in Scotland before my main career took me back overseas, this time to Zürich in Switzerland, where I’ve been based for the last nine years.
Switzerland isn’t the kind of country that you come to for the night life, so it became the final nail in the coffin and I made the decision to hang up my headphones when I moved here. A move that, when I look back on it now, may have been somewhat premature. Only a few years later, I was introduced to the Soul Weekender scene and realised I should’ve stuck with my passion a little bit longer.
Now happy to be part of the soul connexion team, thoroughly enjoying getting my hands dirty again, and amazed at the warm welcome already given.
Steve.
